Spring is starting to arrive and if you haven’t already opened up your greenhouse you will be doing so in the next few days or weeks. It also means that you’ll need to clean the glass on your greenhouse to eliminate the grime left by winter weather. Cleaning glass in a greenhouse is important to maintain good visibility and to allow for maximum light transmission. Make sure to avoid using abrasive sponges or cleaning agents, as they can scratch the glass. To avoid streaks, dry the glass thoroughly with a squeegee or a lint-free cloth.
7 Steps to Cleaning the Glass in your Greenhouse
Gather Supplies
You’ll need a bucket, warm water, a squeegee, and a cleaning solution (such as a mixture of vinegar and water, or a specialized greenhouse glass cleaner).
Prepare the Cleaning Solution
Mix the cleaning solution according to the instructions, if using a specialized cleaner, or mix a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar.
Remove Debris
Use a broom or brush to remove any loose debris, such as dirt, leaves, or cobwebs, from the glass.
Wash the Glass
Dip a cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution and wash one section of the glass at a time, starting at the top and working your way down. Avoid using a pressure washer, as the force of the water can damage the glass or seals.
Rinse the Glass
Use a hose or bucket of clean water to rinse the glass, making sure to remove all of the cleaning solution.
Dry the Glass
Use a squeegee to remove excess water and prevent streaks. Start at the top of the glass and move the squeegee in a downward motion.
Repeat
Repeat the process as needed until all the glass is clean. This sounds like the instructions on a shampoo bottle for washing your hair, but repeating the process does make a difference and will improve the view and light transmission of the glass.
It’s best to clean the glass on a sunny day when the glass is not too hot. This will help to prevent streaks and will allow the cleaning solution to work effectively.
4 Homemade Cleaning Solutions for Glass
Vinegar Solution
Mix equal parts warm water and white vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar will help to dissolve grime and streaks, leaving the glass streak-free and sparkling.
Baking Soda Solution
Mix a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the glass. Use a scrub brush to gently scrub the glass, then rinse with warm water.
Lemon Juice Solution
Mix equal parts warm water and lemon juice. The lemon juice’s acidity will help to break down dirt and grime, and the solution will leave a fresh, clean scent.
Soap Solution
Mix a few drops of dish soap into a bucket of warm water. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wash the glass, then rinse with clean water.
